Dramatic Glencoe Mountain Rescue: Climber Airlifted with Hypothermia, Catches Bus Home! (2026)

A daring climber, battling hypothermia, was airlifted off a treacherous Glencoe mountain, yet remarkably, they still made it home on the bus!

In a dramatic rescue, the unnamed climber found themselves stranded on steep, icy terrain amidst wintry chaos. The Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team sprang into action, locating the climber and carefully lowering them into position for a helicopter evacuation.

But here's where it gets controversial... After the rescue, volunteers kindly offered the climber a lift back to Glencoe village, ensuring they caught the Ember E4 bus towards Edinburgh.

The rescue was one of five call-outs the team responded to over the weekend, with a yellow weather warning for snow and ice covering much of northern Scotland. The Met Office had warned of blizzard conditions at higher elevations.

On Sunday, a group of three climbers faced a different challenge when one of them fell, sustaining head and wrist injuries. Two nearby climbers abseiled to assist, and the injured climber was airlifted to hospital. The two good Samaritans were then guided off the mountain by the rescue team.

Andy Nelson, the team leader of Glencoe MRT, shed light on the situation, stating that the new year period often sees an increase in winter climbers. However, he attributed the recent spike in incidents to "loose rock" caused by a lack of thawing in the snowy conditions.

"Unless the snow thaws and refreezes, the rock on the mountain crags doesn't bind together properly, which could explain some of the accidents," he explained.

Nelson continued, "The people we've rescued haven't made poor choices; they've just been a bit unlucky. Even the paths lower down can be icier than higher up, making that initial 300m ascent more treacherous than expected."

He concluded with a word of advice: "We urge everyone to be well-prepared for the conditions."

So, what do you think? Is it a matter of bad luck or could these incidents have been avoided with better preparation? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
