While they've made some solid moves to bolster their starting pitching staff this offseason, a key infield spot has opened up following Alex Bregman's departure to the Chicago Cubs in free agency. But here's where it gets interesting... According to former MLB General Manager Jim Bowden, another All-Star shortstop might just be available.
Bowden recently reported that the Washington Nationals might be open to discussing a trade for their talented shortstop, C.J. Abrams. And guess who's being eyed as a prime trade partner? You guessed it – the Boston Red Sox!
Now, the Nationals aren't actively trying to move Abrams, but they are listening. They'd likely only consider a deal if they could acquire a truly massive package in return, similar to what they got when they traded MacKenzie Gore to the Texas Rangers. However, the Nationals have made it clear: if they do trade Abrams, they'll be looking for either players ready for the major leagues or high-level prospects who are on the cusp of breaking through.
This is the part most people miss: the Red Sox might just have the perfect pieces to offer! Even though they've traded away a good number of prospects this winter, they still possess a strong farm system and a roster with some depth in their starting rotation and outfield. This means they could potentially assemble a very attractive trade package.
Abrams, who is just 25 years old, has had three strong seasons and is under team control until 2028. Bringing him aboard would allow Trevor Story to shift over to second base. Marcelo Mayer could then fill the void at third base left by Bregman, and Willson Contreras could share first base duties with Triston Casas. It’s a domino effect that could really solidify the infield!
However, it's not a done deal yet. The San Francisco Giants have already shown interest in Abrams and might still be in the running. Bowden also mentioned the New York Yankees, San Diego Padres, and Seattle Mariners as other teams that could be potential fits for Abrams.
