The Kennedy Center Honors ceremony, hosted by Donald Trump, has hit an all-time low in terms of viewership. This year's event attracted the smallest audience ever, with an estimated 2.65 million viewers tuning in, a significant drop from the 4.1 million viewers in the previous year. The CBS broadcast witnessed a staggering 35% decline in ratings, as reported by The Independent.
But here's where it gets controversial: Trump became the first president to host the ceremony, and his involvement seems to have had an impact on its popularity. The Washington Post reveals that his 12-minute opening speech was trimmed down to a mere two minutes by CBS.
The low ratings also coincide with a recent decision by the board overseeing the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to rename the venue the Trump-Kennedy Center. The President himself currently holds the position of chairman on the board.
This year's honorees included a diverse range of talents: Tony Award-winning performer Michael Crawford, known for his role in The Phantom of the Opera; actor and writer Sylvester Stallone, who brought his Broadway show Rocky to the stage; country music legend George Strait; disco and gospel artist Gloria Gaynor; and the iconic rock band KISS.
In a heartwarming tribute to Crawford, Carrie Manolakos, Laura Osnes, and David Phelps performed songs from Hello, Dolly and The Phantom of the Opera. Other notable attendees included Miranda Lambert, Debbie Winans, Kurt Russell, Vince Gill, and Elle King.
