In a move that’s set to shake up the boxing world, Zuffa Boxing has just landed its most high-profile signing yet, and it’s none other than the undisputed cruiserweight champion, Jai Opetaia. But here’s where it gets controversial: can Zuffa’s bold vision for boxing truly align with Opetaia’s relentless pursuit of unifying the division? Let’s dive in.
Zuffa Boxing, the ambitious promotional company, has announced that Jai Opetaia, the lineal, Ring, and IBF cruiserweight champion, has officially joined its roster. The news was confirmed by both parties on Friday, though details about his debut under the Zuffa banner are still forthcoming. Promoter Dana White warmly welcomed Opetaia, stating, ‘Welcome to the Zuffa Boxing family.’ This signing marks a significant partnership between Zuffa, Tasman Boxing (Opetaia’s primary promoter), Goldstar Promotions, and manager Spencer Brown.
Opetaia, a Sydney native now based on Australia’s Gold Coast, boasts an unblemished record of 29-0 with 23 knockouts. The 30-year-old southpaw capped off a stellar 2025 with three consecutive wins, all inside the distance against unbeaten opponents. His most recent victory came on December 6, when he brutally knocked out IBF mandatory challenger Huseyin Cinkara at the Gold Coast Convention Centre in Broadbeach, Australia. Interestingly, that bout was originally scheduled for January 2025 but was postponed after Cinkara suffered an ankle injury during training. David Nyika stepped in as a replacement, only to be dispatched in the fourth round.
Sandwiched between these victories was a fifth-round domination of undefeated Claudio Squeo. Opetaia didn’t hide his frustration during the pre-fight build-up, openly admitting Squeo wasn’t his first choice. He had hoped to face other titlists in the division but couldn’t secure the matchups. Despite this, Opetaia remains laser-focused on his goal of fully unifying the cruiserweight division, and he’s banking on Zuffa to help make it happen.
‘I’m signed with Zuffa Boxing now, pumped for the future,’ Opetaia said in a personal video announcing the deal. ‘Exciting times. Let’s get these big fights over the line—unifications, undisputed. Let’s go.’ But here’s the catch: Zuffa has been vocal about its disinterest in working with sanctioning bodies, which could complicate Opetaia’s unification dreams. Will this partnership truly pave the way for his ambitions, or will it become a stumbling block? Only time will tell.
Zuffa Boxing has already lined up its first three events for its new series on Paramount+, all streaming live from the Meta Apex in Las Vegas. The inaugural ‘Zuffa Boxing 01’ on January 23 will feature Callum Walsh vs. Carlos Ocampo in a 10-round junior middleweight bout. A February 1 show is also planned, though details remain under wraps. ‘Zuffa Boxing 03’ on February 14 will see heavyweights Efe Ajagba and Charles Martin headline the card. Notably, none of Zuffa’s signees are affiliated with any sanctioning body, aligning with the company’s stance against the ‘alphabet’ organizations.
For now, Opetaia isn’t letting his divisional rivals off the hook. Unified WBA/WBO champion Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez and WBC belt holder Noel Mikaeljan remain in his crosshairs. Opetaia is currently in his second reign as IBF champion but has held the lineal and Ring titles since his July 2022 points victory over Mairis Briedis. His first IBF reign ended abruptly when he was stripped for facing unranked Ellis Zorro instead of fulfilling his mandatory rematch with Briedis. The belt remained vacant until May 2024, when Opetaia-Briedis II was rescheduled. Opetaia won via unanimous decision and has since added four knockout defenses, including a sixth-round stoppage of Jack Massey in October 2024 in Riyadh.
Before turning pro in 2015, Opetaia made history as Australia’s youngest-ever Olympic boxer, competing at just 16 years old in the 2012 London Games. His journey from Olympic prodigy to undisputed champion is nothing short of inspiring.
But here’s the burning question: Can Opetaia’s unification dreams survive Zuffa’s anti-sanctioning body stance? Will this partnership elevate his career, or will it become a roadblock?
